Not enough so I released the dash bracket which allowed me to push the dash forward, remove the offending screw, and remove the left cowl. Right now the splined union is soaking in penetrating oil but I'm wondering if there is a better way? The outer is also slightly different for the locating tang on the later switchgear. The instructions that come with the hub are completely useless, and refer to some vehicle that probably does not exist, even though the hub is specially designed for the A-H …typical British humor. My understanding is that the chrome clamp is free to rotate to any angle. Suspension is greased every 3 months so wouldn't have thought it was that and I know the rack was topped up when I bought the car, car has been used a lot and has freed up lovely but the steering has remained the same I have to admit I'm not massively impressed at spending out for a steering wheel, but I really don't like the feel of the wooden one, plus I plan to sell it on via ebay so should recoup some cash for those unexpected repairs!
Driving in sunny weather can be rather dazzling with all the chrome at times I have to say. This tool is designed to engage on the six notches and provides proper leverage for safe removal and replacement. Mine is not vertical at straight ahead. Paul - If you look at item 52 in the image that you included, you will see that it can be slid down out of the rack far enough by disconnecting it from the upper portion of the steering shaft to disengage the pinion gear from the rack gear and can then be moved however far you want.
